Hey Caption Crusaders!
We are super excited to unveil a new feature on caption.me that’s bound to get your creative juices flowing even more! Now, you can suggest edits to your fellow captioneers’ witty quips. Found a way to sharpen that punchline or add a dash of dazzle? Go ahead and suggest an edit!
Here’s how it works:
Adding a Suggestion

Click on the text of a caption to open the caption page:

Click Suggest Edit

Type your preferred version of the caption and click Suggest Edit

The edit will be displayed on the caption page (the changed parts of the caption are highlighted):
Reviewing Suggestions

When you receive a suggestion you’ll see a little orange notification badge on your “me” icon at the top of the site. Click “me” to browse to your profile page:

Click Review to open the caption page, where you’ll see the suggestion:

Decide whether to accept the suggestion.
- Click Reject to pass on a suggestion if you’re not keen on it. You won’t see it anymore. Don’t worry - the suggester won’t be notified.
- Click Accept to accept the suggestion and apply it immediately to your caption:

The person who made the suggestion will be notified that their suggestion was accepted:
It’s all about collaboration and polishing each other’s wit to shine brighter. So, what are you waiting for? Dive into the caption.me ocean and start splashing around with words. Who knows, your suggestions might just carve the winning edge on a caption!

), are we permitted to use this new feature for typos and grammatical errors please?

That’s a good question, Dot.
I’ve already added a couple of suggested edits for grammar/typos so I hope they were taken in the helpful spirit I intended… but I can understand people finding such suggestions annoying.
What do captioneers think?
- I want to receive suggested edits for typos/grammar errors
- I don’t want to receive suggested edits for typos/grammar errors
- Don’t mind either way
- Other (please reply)

I can see why some would find this helpful, and I’m sure most valuable members of our grammar police (Dot included) would use this in a tactful way, but some might not and it may take the fun out of captioning if it feels like we’re having our homework marked!

I understand how you feel, Wolf. I usually only point out typos if they ruin what would otherwise be a great caption, or a grammatical or spelling error which alters the whole meaning of one.

LOL Karyn. They’re hilarious.
Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting for a moment that I’m unappreciative of the occasional help. My grammar is far from perfect and some great captions (not mine obviously) might be written in a hurry or when someone is half asleep and may contain mistakes which require someone to gently point out. That’s absolutely great.
My only concern is if we make it a ‘feature’ rather than the occasional one off, we might encourage overuse and then it might feel to some like they’re in a daily classroom which might worry people enough to not experiment with ideas.
Ultimately, we’re not writing novels or a dissertation here and some captions, specifically written as speech might be written a certain way for a reason (trying to emphasise accents, etc) and might not be grammatically correct.
Anyway, me and Al are in the minority here. Come on Al, let’s go and have a fag behind the bike sheds and moan about the teachers!

With that in mind, I’m going to implement quotas for suggestions in the same way as we have for captions and comments.
We don’t want people treating suggested edits like a sport!

I’m very much in favour of the use of regional accents. I’ve noticed James is fond of using the word ‘luv’. I think he’s taking the p*ss out of us northerners.

Lol, Karyn, I didn’t even know that was regional. I just thought everyone in the UK said ‘luv’ 
On that note, spare a thought for the Kiwi-isms I have to constantly edit out of my language. Honestly, when we meet up at Chris’s dinner party you all won’t understand a single thing I say.
Re the Edit feature, I’m kind of with Wolf: I wouldn’t want people feeling like they’re back at school. But I also think editors can significantly improve captions (the potential to tap this resource was a major factor in my suggested Short Story Comp a while back).
Is it possible to add an ‘Opt-in / out’ toggle, Chris? If so, the “Suggest Edit” button could maybe only appear on captions written by those who have opted-in (or not opted-out).

Cheers, Chris. Are pending edit suggestions only visible to the caption author? If so, a further suggestion:
It might be good to make them visible to everyone, show that a caption has a pending suggestion (perhaps a different highlight colour on the ‘comment’ button), then allow votes to be placed on them. This would reward good edit suggestions.
If this is a bit tricky to implement, maybe edit suggestions that are accepted by the caption author could be awarded a comment upvote? This would be a little sign of recognition, and mirror the old comment-based edit suggestions that caption authors normally upvoted if appreciated.
Of course, this may encourage more edit suggestions, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, but if a quality-based quota is in place this shouldn’t be an issue.

Hi James, seems you and I think very much alike!
Edit suggestions are currently visible to all users, and everyone (not just the recipient of the suggestion) is able to up-vote them.
When an author accepts a suggested edit, this action implicitly up-votes the suggestion.
Scores for suggested edits are recorded at the moment. This screenshot is from my profile page:
The way I’ve designed it, it would be very easy to implement quotas for edit suggestions that are based on historic quality.
Also would be very easy to modify the caption list on photo pages to show an indicator for captions that have suggested edits.

Hello, I may be seeing something slightly different for Step 2 of “Reviewing Suggestions”.

Then I don’t see the Reject/Accept boxes.
I’m fine with making suggested edits manually, but then the person that made the suggestion won’t be notified or necessarily receive credit or it may mess with ‘suggested edit’ stats if they’re tracked.
Have I made an error with following the instructions?

Did you somehow suggest an edit to your own caption?
Hi Chris, the example I gave was a suggestion I made on my own caption. But this was only for demonstration purposes and as a test. There was a suggested edit that someone else made to a different caption, but I didn’t want to share that example as the caption is still live/anonymous and I would have had to redact certain elements.
Hope that makes sense

Addendum:
I gave the first comment a thumbs up which seemed to have the same effect as accepting the changes (sorry didn’t think to try this before).
Then when I checked the other comment it now appears as you have it in your example
