I am out of quota so I cannot caption, however, I STILL VOTE, and I don’t understand, WHY,( with all the available photos to choose from,) two, very similar photos were chosen in one week. I also notice a repeat of the ‘same captions’ being submitted and they are ‘once again’ being selected for the second pic. This doesn’t make any sense. They are just COPY captions for a copy picture.

Yes I was also a bit irritated with a similar photo coming up, but I suppose it just depends what people have voted for over time as to which photo get selected (I assume noone had noticed the simularity before it became the caption photo).
So i guess our challenge is to identify clever new captions for this photo that are different from the captions on the previous one…
A while ago there was a popular request to make the process of choosing the next photo completely “blind” in the sense that no one on the site would know how many votes the photos have, and there would be no advance warning of which photos would be chosen. The site would simply choose the photo with the most votes.
I guess one drawback of this system is that we will occasionally get similar photos appearing, as there’s little we can do to pre-empt it.
However, I think the participants on the “Deja vu” topic do an amazing job manually (and also automatically - @Watch_Dog) sifting through the entire pool of upcoming photos to find any dupes.
Hopefully the featuring of similar photos will be a very rare occurrence. If it starts to happen more often there might be things we can do to prevent it.

Yes KT, you are absolutely right, we should be looking for the unique captions and voting them in. I’m afraid that I am guilty of voting them in again, also… I sighed, when I started reading the same, repeating captions, but then, (when I saw that they were being voted in,) I jumped on the band wagon and voted them also, in order to get the ‘finder pts.’ and gain more ‘caption quota.’ I thought if you can’t beat them, join them.
Halfway through, though, it was becoming irritating, and I had to post and ask why the repeat photo, so soon. I also, could not find ‘original’ captions that I liked, best for the picture.
I normally do vote for all the captions that I like, whether they’re popular or not, but just recently I am trying to pick the ones that will receive the most votes , in order to increase my caption quota.
I have re-visited the photo in question, and tried to vote a couple of original
captiions.

Both great photos, and some ‘similar’ captions are very worthy of votes, but yeah, not ideal to be that close together. Doesn’t happen very often though so I’m sure we can get through it! I personally went back to the other photo tonight prior to submitting captions to make sure my new entries weren’t done previously.
I’m glad nobody has done Dave’s winner though because I supervoted that for being creative!

I agree that it doesn’t happen often, (surprisingly enough,) since I didn’t realize how the photos were selected. Now that I know, it makes sense… it was a random case of bad timing.
It was refreshing to see that there were ‘some’ new captions, though, especially within such a short, time span. I know it must have been difficult, because, with two pics of bullets on a dish, you are bound to use some of the same gun terminology.

There are bound to be similar photos in the pool and I actually don’t mind that they surface close together. In fact, it’s better because it should force us to push on through the pain barrier and strive for fresh angles. When same theme similar photos are, say a year apart, then it usually results in samey captions. I remember groaning when cat after cat photo appeared closely together because it is difficult to come up with new ideas but we eventually became more creative and some great cat captions emerged.
So, respect to The Wolf for conscientiously not regurgitating previous efforts and KTA’s challenge to find the new captions are both my way of thinking too.

That’s a good point about the cat captions, Vivvy. A couple of years ago I’d convinced myself that cat photos were not worth looking at but relatively recently we’ve had some really good ones, particularly the great effort from Karen.
