Updated Advice Page (FAQ and Tips)

Hey all,

I’ve just re-written the “Advice” page (containing FAQ and Tips). Now you can vote for the best content, and adding content is easier.

It can be found in the “Discuss” section of caption.me. Please let me know if anything looks wonky.

I thought I’d look at the section - so I went to the main captions page, and scrolled down to look for it - and the more I scrolled down, the more photos loaded although I had done nothing to say that I wanted them to, and I never got to the footer where the links are. I had to open one of the photos before I was able to scroll down to the bottom of all the captions and find the footer.

Incidentally, once I found it I wondered whether “Tips” was actually different from “FAQs” - ideally it should be, as Tips should be what information the site is offering to people, and FAQs should be the questions which more than one person have asked; and I found that Tips is now 404, and the tips follow the FAQs on the one page.

And, speaking of Tips, can James’s “Local Knowledge for Newbies” be put at the top of the list?

Ah sorry @Molly_R, I should have made it clearer. You get to the page by clicking “Discuss” (top of the page) and then “Advice”

  • Tips are user-submitted advice for other captioneers.

  • FAQs are questions submitted by users regarding caption.me, and they’re answered by me.

The tips are currently listed in order of votes. So, everyone, please vote for your favourites to push them higher up the list.

It might also be time for a tidy up in the content, Chris. Quite a few of the comments and FAQs are no longer relevant or accurate given the system changes over the years. Some need editing, or could safely be deleted.

Happy to help with this.

You’re right, mate - and any help you could give would be appreciated. I had a first pass to correct the links in the FAQ content and update some of the details on prizes

I think you should be able to edit the content - let me know if not.

Chewing through these now, mate. I’m able to delete posts and edit content, but not headings. No biggy though, there’s only a couple of headings I’ve wanted to tweak.

So far I’ve scrapped about 20 posts that had either become irrelevant, or were cases that were specific to individuals and not relevant in general. I’ve probably edited about 20 more.

I was wondering if when I’m done it might be a good idea to reset the votes? The ordering by vote makes sense, but some posts have been accumulating votes for 17 years

Once the tidy up is complete it might be a good time to reset and refresh.

*Also, given the system changes since the original advice and tips, there’s probably room for new ones relevant to the new structure. Perhaps we should invite new tips, reset the old, and start afresh?

Yes, good idea. I will reset the votes today.
