I know I’ve voted against photos many times in the past, but I’ve stopped doing it now and I feel like a better person for it.
Would a thumbs up only option be a much kinder/courteous way of choosing our new pics?
Hear hear. I’ve only recently started looking at the upcoming photos and it seems almost every time I put a thumbs up for something, the next time I look someone has downvoted it!
Or, perhaps if we do keep the downvote option, people should give a reason as to why they’ve downvoted it. And ‘I just don’t like it’ would not be a good enough reason! Nor would ‘I can’t think of anything for it’. Other people do and can!
Mind you, having said all that, if I see another bloody zombie picture come up, I reserve the right to downvote it. Same with portaloos and daleks. I think we’ve had enough of those for a while. Variety is the spice of life and all that!
There are restrictions on downvoting photos - a user needs to have upvoted twice as much as they’ve downvoted. This helps avoid game-playing.
If we push porn and nasty stuff out of the way we’ll be forced to look for it elsewhere.
Remarkably no one has down-voted for a good few days now - maybe times they are a changing…
Alas, the pause on downvoting did not last. Several decent pictures on the first page have just been downvoted this afternoon by the same person (mentioning no names). For no good reason that I can see. As Chris stated above, we do need the downvote to get rid of porn and nasty stuff (and samey stuff). But none of the photos just downvoted were like that. Please please captioneers, just because you don’t like a particular photo, why spoil it for those who do like it? I could have been petty and downvoted the top one that the unmentioned person above had actually upvoted. But I resisted the temptation.
I agree Tracy. I don’t think the downvote option is needed at all. What I don’t think is appreciated is the time spent in actually trying to find decent photos on Flickr, you have to trawl through a lot of crap first and only about a third of ones invited to the upcoming photos are accepted by the photographers.
I’m not promising the Nigel Farage punk photo is going to be easy to caption, I’ve certainly not got anything immediately springing to mind, but hopefully it is worth giving it a go and it makes a nice change from cats, dogs, fat people etc.
Is everybody happy with the photos or do you want me to look for some more? We’ve only had a handful of captions scoring in double figures in the last few days.
Ha ha ha, I get the message, nobody gives much of a toss one way or the other.
People are at it again. ‘Someone’ has just downvoted 3 of the photos at the top. Yet I notice they haven’t voted for a single caption this week! It seems odd to me.
I agree Tracy, it’s not the first time either. Very frustrating and makes me wonder if there is any point in up voting a photo
Does anyone know where Tracy is lately?
I’ve found reading these discussions quite interesting. I didn’t appreciate the time and effort that some go to in finding decent pictures for the site. My major down votes have been for multiple pictures of the same person, or theme, or style - yes I can see you like those, so pick your best and put it forward. However, I have also been guilty of down voting pictures that I can’t stomach staring at, so I’ll try to quell my no votes for these. I like to think part of the challenge is to try to caption whatever is put in front of you.
I accidentally down voted something the first time I went on the previews. The thumbs down symbol looked like a comment box, and I clicked on it to see what the comment was! Once I'd done it, I couldn't undo it. So my apologies to whomever was affected.
