The One That Got Away - 2023

:warning: The poll options were updated on 14th December and the poll was restarted… Please place your votes again - apologies for the inconvenience

2023 has been a great year for captions and prizes. But did you see a caption that should have won a prize and didn’t? Now’s your chance to correct that injustice!

We’ve rounded up the best-loved captions that narrowly missed a prize over the last 12 months. Scroll to the bottom for a poll where you can choose your favourites (up to three).

A £40 Dave Award will be announced on Saturday 16th at 9pm for the winner!

  • It’s difficult to translate YMCA into Chinese.
  • For the last time Nan thats the electric bread knife.
  • To date, 12 Scotsmen have tragically died attempting to get the pound coin.
  • Yep, honest to God, in some countries I’m the starter and you’re the main

  • Euston, we have a problem…
  • I’m glad to see the 3 December winners didn’t waste their prize money.

Morning captioneers. Unfortunately I made a mistake when building this poll, including a caption from December 2023 that is likely to win the normal cash prize.

We could either

  • keep the poll going and disqualify the “sparrow” caption from the results, or
  • restart the poll with a caption from December 2022 instead. This would lose all existing votes.

What would you prefer?

  • Leave the existing poll
  • Re-run after tweaking the poll
  • Don’t mind
  • Other (please comment)

I voted re-run because it would be fair to include the runner up caption for Dec 2022. No idea what it is but it might be the winner! Perhaps the results could be delayed until tomorrow so we have two award ceremonies tomorrow to give everyone time to vote - perhaps there could be an announcement on the main page to ask everyone to re-vote.

I’d be happy to leave the poll as is, but obviously next year if we have the Daves again the Sparrow caption wouldn’t get a second crack.

As far as the non-inclusion of Dec 2022 goes, it really comes down to the selection criteria. Were the selected captions each month’s runner-ups, or just a hand-picked group from the year’s non winners.

If the latter I think we can safely leave the poll as is (assuming the Dec 2022 runner up was considered).

EDIT: Woops, sorry Chris, just reread the options which suggest Dec 2022 was excluded. Um, maybe rerun then? Alternatively, don’t disqualify the sparrow caption, leave the poll as is, and just whistle a happy tune

The criteria for this list was:

The top ten captions written between the 11th Dec 2022 and up to the 10th Dec, 2023 which didn’t win a cash prize (of any amount), ordered by descending rank (score).

The poll is showing overall people are happy to re-run, so I’ve tweaked the criteria and re-started the poll:

The top ten captions written between 28th Nov 2022 and 28th Nov 2023 (inclusive) which didn’t win a cash prize (of any amount), ordered by descending rank (score).

The reason for this date in Nov is to match the cash prize window, which factors in the three-day voting period.

All - please vote again, as the poll has been reset. Apologies for the inconvenience

Thank you all for your kind words. I’d like to thank the Academy of Caption and Pun Arts; it’s truly an honor to be here with all of you, dressed in your ball gowns and tuxedos (or at least that’s how I’m going to imagine you all!). So many great second-place captions this year, it’s a privilege to have been a part of it.

I discovered, too late, that Chris Halliwell deserves a nod, for having done a similar take on our beloved YMCA theme back in 2014, long before I had joined this fun group. (Holds up trophy and looks into the audience) A piece of this goes to you Chris H, wherever you are.

Anyway, many thanks to Chris B, The Wolf and the cast and crew who worked behind the scenes to create these trophies and put on this awards show, - oh, I hear music, I think the orchestra is starting to play me off the stage, You all have a special place in my heart!
