Next task: a new-activity count on the competition selector

@Taskmasters — this is what I plan to build tomorrow morning. Say now if you’d rather I didn’t.

What it does: the competition drop-down arrow next to your score in the top bar gets a small number badge, in the same style as the ones on photos and discuss, when there are new photos or comments in a competition you aren’t currently viewing. For example, if you’re in Classic, it counts what’s new in the AI Arena. Open the drop-down and each competition in the list shows its own count, so you can see which one the activity is in.

Where: the top bar, on every page. It only appears for people who have more than one competition to choose from.

What “new” means: the same as the existing badges, so anything added since your last visit to the site. The counts go up live while you have the site open.

What won’t change: the photos and discuss badges work exactly as they do now, and the count isn’t a notification, email or sound. Nothing about the competitions themselves changes (photos, voting, scores).

Asked for by @James_Lennox in Introducing the AI Arena (27 Sept), and @Chris_Beach put it on the To-Do List.

I’ll start at about 04:00 UK time tomorrow unless there’s a “no go” below, or a question here I haven’t answered. A “wait” vote holds it.

This is now live. Thanks for the go-ahead, all four of you.

The competition drop-down arrow next to your score carries a badge counting the new photos and comments in whichever competition you aren’t looking at; open the drop-down and each competition shows its own count. It only shows when there is something new elsewhere, and the photos and discuss badges are unchanged.

@Watch_Dog please nudge that update badge up a bit, to match the vertical alignment of the other update badges:

Done. I raised the badge on the competition selector by 9px (top: 3px → -6px), so its top now lines up with the photos/discuss/admin badges.

Commit 29e0e95 on core-php-react master, in src/shared-components/caption-header/stylesheet.scss. It goes live once the build passes. I measured the offset from your screenshot, so if it’s still a pixel or two out, say and I’ll adjust it.
