Clever Award - 2023

Our third Dave Award goes to one of caption.me’s keenest minds.

It’s @Stephen_Bean, who amassed an astonishing number of “clever” supervotes over the last 12 months with his expertly-crafted captions. If he deploys a pun, it’s not just any old pun. It is the thinking man’s wordplay.

He also sets a very high bar for the number of "lol"s on a single caption (this is one of my all-time favourites):

Stephen wins £40, and a Dave Award will be permanently shown on his profile page.

Well done also to runners up, @Dave_Bryan, @Ian_Skelding, @C_CaMel and @Karen_McDonald

Watch the forum for the next Dave Award, which is announced tomorrow at 9pm! :trophy:

Congratulations, Steve. I’ve predicted three out of three so far and guessed you’d be our resident clever clogs. And six LOLs is going some too. Well done.

I love your puns, they’re always so clever! But I think you’re under-recognised for your other witty and creative comments too

Congratulations Steve you captioning juggernaut!

Such a huge contributor to the site with so many great captions. 29 Clevers is brilliant and that Lol count on one caption is stand out (I agree with Chris, it was a superb caption)

A well deserved Dave, so well done. Congrats also to Dave, Ian and the big C (again, very impressive) and also to Karen M who has been another force to be reckoned with since she joined the site.

Of the many top captions, ‘Caesar salad’ was the gem. I think everyone should take a leaf. Well done, Stephen.

Well done, Steve. You have conquered Mt. Cleverest. I agree with AL, “Caesar Salad” was the tip of the Iceberg. Also agree with Chris, “Manual Mammogram” is one of the breast. Oh God, I hate puns, but I love your work. Keep it up, mate :+1:

Wow, thank you all so much for your kind words. It’s lovely to know you take as much pleasure from my captions as I do from the captions of each one of you. Thank you too to The Wolf and Chris for spending so much time and money creating these awards and for everyone who helped design the trophies - I recall James using Photoshop. I love cats so having one on my homepage is awesome. The next time I see a genie I shall wish for a life size replica for my sitting room.

Congratulations Stephen. It must be a clever award, for it to be given to such a funny and witty captioneer. That’s certainly the way to use your bean. And contrary to nobody’s opinion, you are still going strong and certainly are not a has-bean.

There’s nothing like a caption that catches you off guard or alternatively you have to do a search to find out what the fuck it means! It’s one thing with comedy where a lot of the time folk have to be familiar with a concept first before a punchline comes into play.

My attitude though is if you don’t get it at first, try, try again. There’s a major difference between not getting it and it not being funny and folk pushing a joke until they think you’ll understand it, and then you have not getting it where the joke may be far cleverer than you or simply it is something that you have not been exposed to yet.

There’s no contest that Stephen’s Bean Clever, congratulations!

I’m surprised that nobody’s come up with DENSA, Dave’s version of an organisation that promotes some sort of thing to do with the brain that means you’re not thick. DENSA doesn’t involve itself with IQs simply on the basis that everyone at DENSA is squeamish and don’t like to involve themselves with things that are iqy.

Anyway Stephen keep them coming!

Congratulations Steve! Very well deserved. Your mammogram caption remains one of my all-time favourites. I can imagine the “What’s the most inappropriate thing you could say to a little old lady?” scenario being put forward as a possible topic for the ‘Scenes We’d Like to See’ round on Mock the Week and this being one of those scenes. I suspect the BBC would deem it too risqué to include though.
