Pleased to see there’s now £95 in the bonus prize fund, and it may grow further.

What kind of bonus prize(s) would people prefer?
How Many Prizes in 2022?
- One large bonus prize
- Multiple medium size prizes e.g. £50 each
- Multiple small prizes e.g. £20 each
- Other (please comment)
- Don’t mind
And when would people like the prizes to be awarded? Christmas Day maybe? Easter, too?
Please let me know what you think would work best.
Thanks!

I like the idea of ‘holiday’ prizes. I think most people would enjoy a Christmas bonus or some holiday money.

Rather than giving additional prizes to captions that have already received a prize I would prefer prizes given to the best captions that did not win a prize. eg. the best 5 captions of the year that did not win a prize could receive £20 each - spread the love I say.

I’m with Steve. I’d prefer to see previously unrewarded captions win bonus prizes. This could be an end of year multiple best of the rest format, or it could be ongoing: perhaps a £20/£25 second place prize on those months that a clear winner isn’t obvious?
I’m also with Al. The Christmas prize, especially, could become a tradition. Its format would be up for debate though if several second place prizes are given (as this would render the individual best of the rest format somewhat redundant).
So, I voted Other, for a hybrid system: Smaller prizes for a limited number of near winners; Bigger prize/s (number being cash dependant) for holiday bonus/es, with format/s to be decided.

Nice to do something special around Christmas time, definitely.
As others have suggested, I think “runner up” captions should always win less than the standard monthly prize. A £100 “one that got away” prize wouldn’t be fair on the better captions that won £50.
Perhaps we should:
- bump up the £50 monthly prize for the best caption to £100 just for the month of December (for a Christmas treat)
- offer some additional runner-up £20 prizes throughout the year, depending on how much money we have in the bonus pot

50 pound prize yes, but the extra 50 should be the best from throughout the year. Why discriminate with only December?

I see what you’re saying, but there’s a fair amount in the pot to create bonus 2nd place prizes throughout the year.
A special £100 cash prize at Christmas time will be brilliant IMO. But that’s just my opinion.

I think Willie was suggesting a “Best of the Best” prize, rather than a “Best of the Rest”. I’d like that too…
…but I also like the idea of a big end of year prize.
We could always compromise and have a £75 Christmas prize and a £25 Bonus Prize for Caption of the Year (poll picked from the 12 monthly winners of 2022).

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought it meant 100 pounds for December’s winner. I don’t think that would be fair for the other 11 winners.
It’s a fair point. Decreasing this to £50 would even things up, and allow for more bonus prizes throughout the year, for deserving 2nd-place captions.
I’ve reduced the December prize to £50, which makes the bonus pool £200 - enough for more than one bonus per month until the end of the year.
