Hope you and yours are safe and well.

Just a little suggestion for a new feature that I was thinking could be a reward for the top finders each week. 

A captioneer would be able to ‘bump’ one of their captions back up to the top of the list of captions that have the same number of votes as it (most likely zero). This would be achieved by the time the caption was posted being reset to the time it was bumped (hopefully not too much coding required). 

The captioneer would need to be aware that if there were any duplicates of their caption then it would then appear as if their bumped caption was the duplicate. 

I appreciate finders get rewarded with supervotes but I was thinking an additional reward like this would be good.
Perhaps 3 ‘bumps’ to the top finder, 2 to 2nd and 1 to 3rd.

I’m interested in ideas like this that reward top finders. These are people who vote early, often and for good captions - and they deserve some kind of reward for that. 


My only slight reservation with this “bumping” idea is that it might be seen as a little unfair for some captioneers to increase the visibility of their own captions?

You could give out 3, 2 and 1 extra quota instead though I don’t see that as being much different to a ‘bump’ as posting an extra caption puts it at the top of the 0 votes received captions. In theory a captioneer could use the extra quota by adding a new caption and if they thought the earlier one was better they could edit both to swap them around, thereby effectively ‘bumping’.



I appreciate the concern re increasing visibility of captions, that’s partly why I suggested only giving out 6 per week, which is minimal in amongst c1000 captions posted each week. The increased visibility is the key feature of the reward. I don’t think it is unfair, or certainly no more so than giving more quota would be. Perhaps other captioneers can say what they think.

It was at a time when there was some very heavy early voting, and if your caption wasn’t appreciated by one or two voters it could suddenly be plunged 20+ captions down. My idea was to use finder points to give a temporary bump back to the top so that there was a short highly visible period.

The blitzkrieg voting has eased since then, but there are still occasions when a caption I really like, (normally one of my more obscure ones) doesn’t find a voter who gets the joke before it tumbles down into the bleak depths of the zero sea. On those occasions a temporary bump would be great.

Chris’s reservation that the self promotion may seem unfair is justified, but on the flipside it would be a reward for those gaining Finder’s Points. I wouldn’t limit the perk to the top 3 finders though, but would make it available to anyone gaining a certain number of points in a week. This would encourage quality finds.

I’d definitely limit its use though. Maybe only once a week so that it was used exclusively for that special caption that slipped through the gaps. And if the “bump” is too severe, a lite alternative could be a “highlight”, which would leave the caption in its normal position, but let people know it’s worth a read.

One downside to making it too advantageous to getting Finder’s points would be people might stop voting for captions on zero votes that are unlikely to get more votes such as those posted late, to avoid their Finder’s score going down.

I wonder how many people really focus on gaming the system as a top priority when they vote?  I bet it’s only very few.

I like the idea of rewarding those who gain Finder’s points more. Perhaps Finders points could be totted up and stored on the table we have on our personal pages. Thinking about Troompa’s comment about boosts making it harder to tell who had come up with an idea first, maybe it would be best to keep the original time stamp and just elevate the caption’s position. That way it would still only have 3 days to receive votes rather than up to 6,9, 12 etc days depending on the number of boosts. I wonder if two captioneers jointly in the lead might each use several ‘boosts’ to try to put their caption ahead. That might be a reason to restrict boosts to captions on zero votes.
