2022 is gonna be an expensive year for me as I’m having some major work done on my house, and currently living in a rental. It’s a bad year to be paying double housing costs ☹ For that reason, I’m trimming my expenses, and I’m really sad to say I’ll be reducing the cash prize from £50 to £20 for 2022. The prize will be back up to £50 in 2023 … or alternatively, if I find a sponsor for the site, it’ll be back sooner. I hope this doesn’t come as a massive disappointment - thanks everyone for continuing to support the site with your brilliant captions and photos. ---

Chris, I have always thought that it was amazing that you should provide such large cash prizes from your own pocket! When I first arrived, I was looking for advertisements to click, or anything else to earn money for the site, but there was nothing like that. I strongly suspect that most of us would continue to play if the only monthly prize was a “congratulations” - it isn’t the money that matters! Thank you for everything that you do; this place is like nowhere else. ---

Totally fair enough, Chris. I’ve always wondered why you should bear the cost of the prize on top of maintaining the site anyway. As an alternative suggestion to reducing the prize, would anyone be keen on donating to the prize pool? Rough maths suggests we’d only need 300 quid to keep the prize at £50. That would only be £20 a head for 15 of us, less if more people were willing to contribute. Thoughts? ---

A crowd funded prize is a really good idea, if folk can afford it, are game and it doesn’t leave them too out of pocket. I remember the days when there was no cash prize at all. Kudos is kudos but cash can act as a good incentive. It’d be great if the prize wasn’t money but almost like some of the items you might find as a raffle prize. If anyone has any curious items that could become much coveted by captioners, it’d be great to see them hoisted upon [caption.me](http://caption.me) as a prize. I only mean this in a humourous regard and some of the pictures have provided inspiration. So the next time you’re captioning Henry’s Tub o’ Sauce, this wonderful item could be yours folks! The only thing is paying postage for said items. Money’s much easier to transfer! ---

I’m up for a whip round. Even if we all put in £2 a month, that would cover a winner’s and probably runner up prize. Maybe create a poll, Chris B? ---

I do like the fact that this isn’t being implemented as an obligatory membership and people are getting to chose whether they like this idea or not above. If this does prove to be a success and gets the go-ahead, I get the fact that there may be a supplement every month but could there also be an option where you could pay the full whack upfront for a year? If 12 regulars/visitors etc were interested and were willing to donate £50 each, that’d keep the prize draw going all year. There’s also exchange rates to consider as well because we’ve got captioners or will have from further afield who might be interested in donating too? 🤔 I’d also recommend maybe sending folk an email so that they’re aware of this - but not in the sense that it becomes a canvassing operation so that if they’re interested they can partake in the vote too. ---

In the age of GDPR I’m very careful about the emails I send out, and I definitely wouldn’t want to send anything that looked like a “begging” email. I think I may mention it as a yellow message at the top of the site instead. I’d want to make things as transparent as possible so everyone can see that the money is going into the prize fund. So I’d list the sponsorship amounts on a page on the site and show how they’re contributing to each monthly cash prize. £20 a month prize, but £100 prize for caption of the year. Starting on a particular month finishing I year later. This may encourage captioneers to stay on the site, and still gives captioneers who join throughout the year a chance to come up with a£100 caption. ---

I like that idea, John. Hopefully we can boost the monthly prize, and also create an annual prize akin to the Christmas bonus prizes we sometimes run. It would be nice if the month’s second and third place captions received recognition but it doesn’t have to be money. A 2nd or 3rd place sticker similar to the £50 sticker would still feel like an amazing achievement. ---

What a wonderful outpouring of generosity from our group! The prize money was never important to me, I’m just here to enjoy the creative community… well, that and the occasional affirmation when that little vote chime rings. But if donations for a higher cash award helps attract and retain participants, I’m all for it. Makes this place feel even more like a collective effort. (The donations being voluntary will be key, of course, to avoid any accusations of online gambling!) Thanks, as always, to @Chris_Beach, for all that you do. Keep the fun captions coming, everyone. As for me, I’ll keep hoping to make it to the top of that leaderboard someday, with or without a prize! :^) Crunchy ---

Thank you @Crunchy_Chords for that lovely contribution received this evening! We’re now on £55 for April and £50 for subsequent months. Thanks to the generosity of a handful of captioneers, we now have a larger cash prize than ever before. The last few days have proved that we do have a genuine “collective” here on this site. Great to be part of it. ---
